| Intro Info Technical Theatre 1 and 2 Mr. Rome Welcome to a class unlike any other! This is the place to learn how to translate ideas into color, light, sound, paint, textures, and objects. How to read a script and interpret it in terms of sound, lighting, set, costumes, makeup, publicity and props. How to create “Theatre Magic!” Being a “techie” means being proud of jumping in to solve problems and get things done. There are a whole lot of ways to do that, and we’ll be exploring many of them here. You need to come to class each time ready to try new things, to work safely as well as creatively, to take care of the stuff used, to work collaboratively, and to use common sense while having a good time doing tech work. WHO’s WHO: Tech 1 – Acquisition of skills (how’z all this stuff work, anyway?) Tech 2 – Application of Skills. The Tech 2 students should be able to serve as mentors and role models for the T1’s, as well as picking up new skills of their own. So, T1s…if you’ve got questions, ask one of the T2’s. They’ll be happy to help! WEBSITE – Check fcps.blackboard.com and www.RobinsonDrama.org daily for updated info about HOMEWORK, classes and events. SAFETY – The Prop Shop has plenty of tools and equipment that is potentially dangerous. We’ll teach you how to use it properly; you must do so ALL the time (and assure that others do, too). Come dressed to work; class may include climbing ladders, dealing with sawdust, paint, glue, whatever! You can leave paint clothes here if you like. Hair may have to be tied back, and open toed shoes can be hazardous. THEATRE NOTEBOOK – You’ll need a way to store all the ideas, sketches, and other information (including handouts) that comes your way each class. Go right out and get yourself a big ole sketchbook or notebook (or both). Label it with your name! Bring it in for next class. TECH LICENSE – You’ll be qualifying for your Tech License, and offered a chance to help run sound and lights for many school events (and some paying jobs, too, perhaps). Part of the process is a PARENT WALKTHROUGH of the theatre, and their permission for where you can go/climb and what tools you can/can’t use. This required walkthrough happens at the DRAMA BOOSTER MEETING on Tuessday, Sept. 13th at 7:30 in the Russell Theatre. VTA for TECH 2 – Those T2’s interested in attending VTA with the IB students (Nov.1-3 at the Reston Hyatt) must enter the Set Model or Costuming competition, and complete all paperwork (and $) on schedule. Check our website (and www.vtasite.org) or more details. ARENA STAGE – A limited number of tickets are available for the Arena Stage matinee series of plays during the year (4 times). First paid ($76 to RSS), first served. This is not required, but it’s a terrific chance to see top notch professionals do what they do best, in a very interesting space (and with a BIG budget), and talk with actors, too. PRODUCTION WORK – The absolute BEST WAY for the classwork to make sense and fit together is to apply it on a real production. You are required to see each of Robinson’s high school shows (let me know early if $ is a problem), but working on them is much more fun and valuable to you. Sign up for stage crews. You also get priority for crew chief positions. And it’s a great way to make lasting friends (nothing quite like all that running around in the darkness while dressing in all black…)! Production hours may be required later in the year. NVTF – The Northern Virginia Theatre Festival is a full Saturday each winter, of tech events (and actor events) done competitively. I encourage you to participate. (Major extra credit!!) March 4th at Falls Church HS. More details later. OUTSIDE PROJECTS – At times we are commissioned to provide technical services for outside groups, either those using Robinson’s facilities or at their own location. For example, one of our feeder elementary schools has used us to run sound and lighting at their school for their annual Spring Extravaganza. This touring situation is terrific experience (and mucho extra credit), but note that these outside jobs occur without my supervision. This is the real thing. That means that you represent Robinson by your (stellar and efficient!!) behavior, and that your safety and security are outside FCPS control. You’ll never be required to take one of these jobs, but I hope you can, cuz they’re real win-win’s for the community/us. Tech 1 Grading Info HERE Tech 2 Grading Info HERE |
