TA1 Intro Info       2005-06    Mr. Rome
Welcome!  Your role is to participate.  This means watching, listening, doing, and thinking.  You don't have to be great at everything, but you do have to try.  Our game plan is to explore all the basics of theatre from acting to stagecraft, including reading, improvising and writing, from stage to television and theatre to art, music and dance.  We'll try to figure out what this "theatre" thing is, and what difference it makes to you and the world!  It'll be fun, active and different.  Please have a folder with paper and pencil in class daily.  Students may leave these in a class file.   Enjoy the journey!

DECORUM
Remember, no T.H.E.F.T. of class time is permitted (that's: Talking out of turn; Holding up class for "debate"; Explaining instead of listening; Fooling around; Talk-back).  Got a question about the class work? Raise your hand. Got a question NOT about the class work? Write it down and hand it to me instead of interrupting (use your Agenda if you need to leave class); I'll answer soon as I can!

MAKING PROGRESS
Mistakes are good.  Learn from 'em and improve!  Besides, there's often NO one right answer. In class, it's about the journey, not the destination.  Just stay focused, have fun, experiment, help each other, and take time to notice why you did stuff and what you got from it.  Enjoy!

REFERENCE VIDEOTAPE
What's most important is how far you can progress, starting from now.  To really see that progress, I invite you to bring in a blank videotape labeled with your name (!).  We'll tape a standard audition monologue (or something), and keep it on file.  You may ask to have any of your performance work added to your tape - if logistics allow - and we'll repeat the monologue once or twice a year.  I think you'll find this a valuable experiment..

THEATRE NOTEBOOK
Begin keeping a journal of the road you're about to travel.  How do you feel about class? What did you do?  What helps or frustrates you?  What are your strengths and weaknesses?  Look for the "milestones" that suggest you're making progress.  You may keep your entries in a folder in my file cabinet.  Sketches and show programs can go in here, too.  You'll have some assignments that are easiest to keep in this notebook, so bring in a small loose leaf binder by next class.

WEB SAVVY (www.RobinsonDrama.org) (http://fcps.blackboard.com)
Keep up with homework assignments by internet! Check your BLACKBOARD page frequently! I also post basic information about the classes, and handouts too, on the CLASSES link from our Home Page.  It is not possible to keep current, though, so expect a time lag before stuff is available.

SPECIAL PLAY FOR NEW ACTORS?
Our "Newbie Show" is in transition this year, but we hope to mount a winter children's theatre show that will offer new actors lots of opportunities on stage and backstage, so keep a lookout for more information!
